WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a form of high speed data conventionally regarded as a 4G (fourth generation) wireless technology. WiMax expands on the basic technological foundations of conventional, local Wi-Fi networks, but drastically expands the service's signal range and capacity. Theoretical maximum speeds top out around 30-40Mbit/s, but real-world speeds are, as always, much slower (400kbit/s-2Mbit/s).

WiMax is currently utilized by Sprint, as a substitute for more conventional LG technologies. Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, too, have offered WiMax plans. Service has been reportedly varied in quality, as increases in user activity bear heavily on available speeds.
