Noise Reduction (Imaging)

Noise Reduction is a common feature in modern digital cameras, cameraphones, and photo editing software. Digital cameras, particularly those that allow high or fast ISO settings, will sometimes add noise—unwanted, jarring points of light and dark in an image, that give the impression of lower resolution—when seeking to maximize the range of light and color. Noise reduction software—either built in to the camera interface, or applied in editing programs, after the fact—utilizes a series of algorithms to eliminate and 'smooth over' these points. However, said algorithms often reduce overall clarity, as some degree of blending is usually necessary. Contrast and defintion can thus suffer.
