Impedance is a means of measuring the success of a circuit in converting incoming voltage into electrical current. Impedance is measured in ohms, a unit named for Georg Simon Ohm, the German physicist who first recognized the relative proportionality of voltage and current. This proportionality is referred to as Ohm's law. Impedance refers specifically to the combination of resistance and frequency in that incoming current.

What does the impedance figure for my headset mean?

Within the world of consumer headsets, impedance refers to the efficiency of headset drivers in resisting the pressure created by the output of a device. A lower number of ohms typically translates to an increased efficiency in sound output. Additionally, a lower impedance figure tends to mean that a headset will drain less power.

The majority of headsets sold for use with consumer electronics are low-impedance, averaging around 32 ohms.
