I searched the web over a week to find this Dell Mini 1012 Netbook.
Other web sites eglobal & ecommelectronics are Scam Sites ~BEWARE~
All4cellular sent me an Awesome Dell (Refurbished) I was suprised at the Quality of the Item I just purchased sight unseen.
Shipping price was the best on line and all4cellular reviews put my mind at ease when purchasing this Dell Mini.
I would buy from all4cellular again.
Beware of scam sites, i've been taught a lesson on this on-line buying experiance.
Thank You All-4-Cellular (Posted on May 11, 2012)
OK transaction, but surprised at the "refurbished" ended up being a significant scratch and dent. So much so that I was unable to "gift" it as was my intent. (Posted on April 3, 2012)
I ordered this machine as a 'in front of the TV' device vs a costly tablet. Yeah it isn't a tablet but yes it can do so much more for what I need. I love to surf and watch TV since surfing is the new 'TV time'. A keyboard is a plus for surfing and responding to emails/facebook. No problems with flash as tablets have (iPad). I can fully do required work, remote desktop and the screen size is fantastic. Love this machine. I do recommend a laptop 'pad' or other type of cooling surface. It has no fan and placing on top of a pillow or pants can get pretty warm. The power block gets a little too warm for my taste so I will look for a secondary block that is a little bigger vs the small matchbox car that it can with. I also recommend upgrading to 2GB for better performance. (Posted on March 17, 2012)
I originally purchased a "Scratch + Dent" version in black on sale for $150, but they had a supply problem and sent me an E-Mail apology(!) stating that the blue version with a larger hard drive would be sent. Great customer service. Other suppliers have cancelled orders when this happens. THANK YOU all4cellular!
These little netbooks are not going to replace your high-power laptop or desktop, but for portability and affordablity these are hard to beat. The 1366x768 screen resolution is very sharp, and the LED backlight is very bright. The unit has built-in ability to rotate the screen, so if you read a lot of E_books you can use the 1012 in portrait mode and switch back and forth easily. My deal came with the 3-cell battery which still gave me hours of use if I choose the low-level light setting.
1 - Have an 8GB or larger flash drive and backup the device right off before messing with it.
2 - Before it arrives, go to Microsoft and download the Win7 Service Pack 1, 32bit version. I could not get it to install through the OS "UPDATE" function in Windows7 (figures). After many failed updates I got the file from MS directly and installed it that way. After that all other updates installed easily.
3 - I experienced the firewall problems as others have reported on the Internet. McAffee kept stopping its firewall and I never got the Windows7 OS firewall to even start. The Solution:
- First, register the included McAffee (just in case)
- Next, go to the McAffee website and follow their instructions to remove McAffee from the computer (no loss for me as it never worked)
-Finally, get Avast Anti Virus (free) and get Comodo Firewall (free).
I have fairly large hands (XL gloves) and was a bit concerned over the keyboard, but it is excellent, gives good tactile feedback, the print on the keys is easy to read, and the layout is very good.
The touchpad is marginal. The L and R buttons are incorporated into the pad, and although they are mechanical click buttons you have to be careful how you touch them. My recommendation is to carry a small wireless mouse (choose one of the Logitech units with the tiny receiver) and use the touchpad only as necessary.
As a portable reader, browser, movie watcher, etc., this thing is a compact wonder. (Posted on March 12, 2012)
